Panels make direct current, electrons you generate flow one way, from the panel to where they do work. Your house runs on alternating current, electrons sloshing back and forth, transferring their energy to where the work happens. The inverter is the box that converts one to the other, and it is also the brain that decides how hard each panel is worked. SolarEdge split that job in two: a small optimiser bolted behind every panel, and one inverter for the whole array.
Why per-panel matters
In a conventional string system, panels are wired in series and the whole string is driven at one operating point. The weakest panel sets the pace. A chimney shadow across two panels at 4pm quietly costs you output from all fourteen.
An optimiser is a small DC-DC converter fitted to each panel. It runs that panel at its own best operating point and hands a conditioned output to the string, so a shaded, soiled or slightly mismatched panel only costs you that panel.
The same hardware reports each panel's output continuously. That is the difference between knowing your system made less last month and knowing that panel nine has been down since the 14th.
Safety
Optimisers shut their panel down to a low safe voltage when the inverter is switched off or loses AC power. A conventional string sits at full DC voltage whenever the sun is on it, which matters to anyone working on the roof, including the fire service.
Warranties
The optimisers carry a 25 year warranty, matched to the expected life of the panels. The inverter, which contains the power electronics that work hardest, carries 12 years as standard and can be extended.
The split is deliberate: the parts on the roof are the ones you do not want to touch again, so they are warrantied for the life of the array, while the one serviceable box sits at low level where it can be swapped in an hour.
If something goes wrong
The monitoring tells us first, usually before you notice anything on your bill. We can see per-panel output, inverter status and error codes remotely.
An inverter fault is a ground-level swap. An optimiser fault means one panel off for a visit. Either way you call us and we deal with the manufacturer.
The honest downsides
More components on the roof than a plain string system. The counter-argument is the 25 year warranty and the fact that a failure is visible and isolated rather than silent.
It is a single-vendor ecosystem. Mixing another manufacturer's optimisers into a SolarEdge array is not supported.
On a completely unshaded, single-orientation roof, the extra yield from optimisation is small, and the case rests mainly on monitoring, safety and fault isolation.
